UNI EN ISO 14001:2001

The collective awareness about the importance of environmental protection implies the necessity for avant-garde companies of making their instruments of processes management transparent and reliable, in order to project on the outward a company image of sensitivity regarding this issue.
A System of Environmental Management is the set of steps taken by the Direction in order to set going its own operational structure along with a responsible environmental behaviour.
It is, therefore, an integrated managing system whose processes and operational procedures, carried out by adequately trained personnel with definite responsibilities, aim at working out its environmental policy.
Considering that systems of environmental management are voluntary instruments not imposed by any law, but regulated by special norms that point out which requirements these systems must have, Verolux S.r.l.’s necessity was to obtain an external acknowledgement, that is a certification that would give it a higher credibility within its competitive operating field.
Thinking that environmental care has some costs for the producer is surely spontaneous and legitimate, but nothing is wronger than that.
The realization of a system of environment care, indeed, is not just an expense.
Many, in fact, are the “environmental” benefits to get, and, among these, let us consider the following:

  • reduction of the costs related to environmental aspects;

  • reduction of environmental risks;

  • managing resolution of mandatory environmental normative fulfilments;

  • utilization of potentials of energy and raw materials saving;

  • economic benefit from the increase of internal efficiency and personnel motivation;

  • reduction of accident risks.

Consequently, the benefits for a firm that adopts the ISO 14000 standard are plentiful; among them, for example, let us consider the following:

  • strengthened and documented control of the respect for the law;

  • higher contractual capacity (protection or increase of market shares);

  • improved relationships with investors, insurance companies, etc;

  • improved internal relationships (employees, etc.) and external ones (local communities, etc.);

  • image benefits and competitive advantages;

  • opening up of new markets.
